A Day on the Rock
We have a number of sites in Thailand that can offer routes ranging from a 45-degree slope on which students can practice climbing skills to full sport climbing routes complete with overhangs requiring advanced climbing skills. Some are close to Bangkok, others in the North and South. This day programme is designed to introduce the students to rope based activities.
Activities
Briefing: On arrival the participants will first be given a short talk involving safety issues and the conduct that is to be used during the day, we will introduce basic climbing terms and equipment.
Bouldering: Participants will practice & improve climbing techniques, including : edging, smearing, using the legs, three points of contact, standing off from the face etc. Students will assist each other in this activity, acting as spotters. (the activity is carried out only a few inches above the ground).
Harness Class: Students will learn how to check a climbing harmess, fit it correctly and how to tie into the climbing rope. Different methods of tying in to the rope will be shown. Students will have the hamess fitted and checked by Wild Planet Staff members prior to climbing.
Belaying / Climbing: The main activity of the day will involve the students climbing a short sport-climbing route. The students will be protected using a top rope system. The benefits of using this system are that the student when falling only travels a very short distance and can immediately regain the rock face from where they fell and attempt the move again. Several routes are on offer and students are free to move from one to the other.
