NAN6/5NAWA: Nam Wa Descent

A expedition consisting of self supported whitewater raft descent via approach trek. Ideal for Silver expedition or adventurous journey level

The Nam Wa is a river that has regularly spaced white water of between grade 2 and 4 down most of the expedition length. The whitewater sections are interspersed with grade 2 moving water allowing rests relaxation and the opportunity to get off the raft, swim and cool down.

Students are expected to help with the camping, preparation of meals, packing and unpacking of the rafts.

Raft teams are given camp duties on a rotational basis thought the expedition.

This program can be combined with outreach programs fro a longer trip. As an expedition it lends it self to sliver or gold level depending on level of support provided by Wild Planet.

The Program

Notes

This itinerary is a flexible outline and can be tailored to fit the needs of the group or program. Accessing Nan, our starting point is either via overnight train or a flight from Bangkok ( 6 times per day) or Chiang Mai ( 2 times per day) Flight options offers chance to shorten trip to 5 days/4 nights if evening return flight taken.

DAY 1

Option A: TRAIN Transfer to Hua Lumpong railway station to join overnight sleeper train to Denchai Train departs around 06.40pm Evening train to Denchai. Overnight Sleeper Train Option B: FLIGHT Bkk - Nan Arrive Nan Dinner, Overnight Hotel

DAY 2

Option A: Early morning arrival Denchai Station (approx 04.40) board minibuses for transfer to Nan town Arrival in Nan approx. 06.40 @ admin office. Showers available and change into trekking gear. Issuing of equipment and packing of gear for expedition phase. Option B: Check out of hotel Breakfast before leaving Nan to transfer to trekking start point (approx. 1 hr.30 min) Students will be provided lunch, snacks and water to carry with them. Approximate distance 8.5 km climb over hill into next valley then decent down and along valley floor to towards hillside location of the research centre finished by a short climb up to the centre. Arrival at Phu Pha foundation Royal project and research centre. Dinner Students will be given instruction in safety procedures for the following along with an overview of camping equipment. Overnight dormitories’ for students, individual rooms for staff.

DAY 3

Early morning start,. Morning trek down into the valley and to the put in point of raft at Sop Muang. Approximate distance 7 km single descent then following floor of valley along a tributary of the Nam Wa itself. Lunch on river bank + briefing + rig rafts Rafts will be approx 6 students + 1 guide. Student rafts will carry students own belongings in dry bags + tents and sleeping bags. In addition we will have 2 -3 supply rafts carrying camp kitchen + supplies. These will be paddled by our logistics staff who will also provide thowbags and rescue cover on the sections when necessary. Afternoon on river 3-4 hours to our overnight campsite at Sop Huey Loi. Grade 2 - 3 rapids including Hi Jum and Sop Huey Pla Kang. On arrival students to pitch tents within their 3 person tent groups. Overnight @ riverside campsite. Students teams to assist with dinner and preparation of next days lunch. Overnight camping

DAY 4

Early start (sunrise) to break camp and pack rafts. Student teams to prepare breakfast etc and assist with finishing lunch packing. Full river day 8 - 9 hours. Breaks on the river will be morning and afternoon snack breaks + lunch break. All main rapids will be inspected prior to running and safety teams set. Rapids include Sop Huey Dua and Phi Pa the biggest on the expedition. On arrival students to pitch tents within their 3 person tent groups. Overnight @ riverside campsite. Students teams to assist with dinner and preparation of next days lunch. Overnight camping

DAY 5

Rise to break camp and pack rafts. Student teams to prepare breakfast etc and assist with finishing lunch packing. Full river day 8 - 9 hours. Breaks on the river will be morning snack break only All main rapids will be inspected prior to running and safety teams set. Lunch at take out, pack rafts and equipment. Short trek to transfer point back to Nan town, trek can be completed in rafting gear. Rafts and equipment transported out via 4WD Transfer back to Nan head office. Group to shower and change for journey back . 17.30 Dinner at riverside restaurant in Nan TRAIN: Transfer to Denchai via minibus for 20.40 train departure. Overnight sleeper train to Bangkok FLIGHT: Transfer to airport for 19.05 flight to Bkk or overnight Hotel Nan

DAY 6

TRAIN: Arrive Bangkok approx 06.00 Transfer from train station to school/airport/hotel FLIGHT : Breakfast, check out of hotel Transfer from hotel to airport. Fly Nan to Bkk
